This has already happenned before knocking a few of the USA's GPS satelites out.

GPS sats are 22,000 miles up though and well beyond the lower limits of the van allen belt

A mine of useless information..I say that because the reality is that it is usually uni types who dig atound in this stuff.. and to a greater degree it is just that....uselss in the real world (like uni education)....unless we are discussing (potentially) the end of the world on a cycling forum
