My work is oh so awkward to get to by public transport!
So today a chap from another department asks me if I'd brought my bike - it was raining heavily- I said yes, of course  he proceeds to tell me about how he's been commuting by bike for the last week, loving it, how much time saved on waiting for the bus, where he keeps his bike, he tells me proudly "now it's 3 of us coming to work on the bike!" He, he, it's actually a few more, but I did not have the heart to tell him, he sounded so enthusiastic: he's got the cycling bug!
Last October it was me talking proudly about my first commute by bike to the colleague that first gave me the notion. This coming winter, it will be me telling this new cyclist to be careful on the icy roads, like I was warned when I started.
Tomorrow I will give him one of my spare cycle chat stickers, and recommend him to read the beginners and the commuting forums. :bicycle:

MrJamie

Oaf on a Bike
Good stuff  Its cool how us newbies can quickly start helping out the next generation of newbies

I almost get frustrated with people for not seeing the merits of cycling around for short journeys, especially when its nice.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Keep spreading the word !!

My workplace you cant get there by public transport so its either a car or cycle , if i am stuck i can blag a lift off a guy who lives round the corner but i think i have done that twice so far when it was snowing badly so we could dig the car out if we got stuck .

Keep up the good work. But... Don't you have bike sheds/parking at work? - if so, it would surely be obvious how many cyclists there are. If not, start complaining. Oh- and I didn't know about the stickers either. I'm not sure where to stick them 'though.

I became infamous during last year's snow when I was the only one of the managers who made it in, and on time!

4x4s hadn't made it, nor had public transport, but my recumbent trike with snow tyres did!

Bike parking in my work: BIIIIIIIGGGGG building (secc) 3 bike racks outside, open to the elements and to the perusing of various unsavoury characters
A manager's very expensive bike was chained there and stolen: we leave it for guests.
Various hiding places, according to department: IT cupboard, back stairs landing (mine, until the health and safety guy finds me out), back of the kitchen, disused staff toilets, security portacabin, catering staff changing room, spare crockery room.
No doubt there is more I have not discovered yet, I've seen office staff wheeling in their bikes, probably hiding from the health and safety guy like me
No way I'm gonna complain: it attracts attention of the managers, they already think I'm not right in the heid!
They could force me to leave the bike outside, in the cold, in the rain, my poor baby.
I don't know how many staff come to work on the bike every day, but I know the only 2 women are me and a girl from G4S.
When the weather is nice a couple of agency girls use the bike too, they already told me I'm crazy to cycle in the rain, but then they live more central, they could walk it.
Me: bus/bus/walk, or walk/train/walk. A bit of rain is not gonna put me of cycling to work ... ice might.

I notice from their website SECC claim their 'cycling friendly credentials'" :

Our cycle storage racks are located in the following areas around SECC:

Main Building

- East Entrance ~ Near the elevated walkway

- West Entrance ~ South East corner of Car Park 5

Clyde Auditorium

- South East of Main entrance

Please note: They hold six cycles each."

Sheesh- 18 places! for a major venue. OK I'm lucky - I work on a site with 2000 employees and we have around 200 mostly covered secure cycle rack places and several showers - even that's not enough - but it should be normal, not an exception. Maybe it isn't you who should be doing the complaining, but somebody should. Maybe a sympathetic manger type? AIUI there are match funding grants (http://cyclingscotland.msol.org.uk/documents/index.php?categoryID=24) available for companies encouraging cycling to work which would include staff cycle parking.

SECC should be ashamed of itself. So should Glasgow. (from an Edinburger...)
