has no-one mentioned Brian Blessed's understated display of method acting in Flash Gordon? A part he was born to play.
Wonderful though the above is, and you really can't have too much of Blessed's barbarian king turn - repeated in Doctor Who's otherwise rather weak "trial of a timelord" - Blessed is a fine and subtle actor - remember his Augustus in I Claudius - (or should it be Clavdivs?). Superb

another candidate - William H Macey, usually a (fine) character actor in supporting roles - gets his chance in the film The Cooler. This is Macey's film as he portrays a loser who's luck changes when he finds love. He conveys his stoic acceptance of sadness with just a look when his co-star Maria Bello (also superb) noticing his cat flap asks if he has a cat. The cat of course has buggered off compounding his loneliness - a minor masterpiece and Macey's career performance

I couldn't see what the fuss was about Ray Winston, but I thought he was good in Sexy Beast. The best bit of acting was when Mr Big, Teddy Bass (Ian McShane) comes into the dining room of the Grosvenor Hotel where Gal Dove (Ray Winston) is eating his breakfast. Teddy wants Gal to verify some details in the account he gave him about the last time he saw Don Logan, because he can't find out what has happened to him. Unfortunately I cannot find it on YouTube.
