Worse job I ever had was working in the Forde Control Room whilevI was recovering from surgery.

For the most part it was staffed withmcivilians who seemed to think the place was run for their benefit rather than to support the officers out on the ground. Largely untrained yet chosen to second guess pretty much everything trained and experience coppers said, and they spent an inordinate amount of time worrying about their job titles (civilians, then support staff, then police staff) instead of doing the job they were paid to do.

I swear I'd have chinned someone if id been on there much longer, and as it was I was thrown out sharpish once I'd recovered sufficiently,

Fortunately I've never had to do anything physically horrible. Worst was working at a Uni under two rather egotistical academics. The job looked great on paper but quickly realised it was made up. They really wanted a glorified admin person to do all their daily chores they felt were beneath them. Both of them were incredibly manipulative and would constantly make stuff up and try and drop me in it. Thankfully my direct manager was great (academics aren't allowed to manage admin staff in uni's) and he knew what they were up to, but it was a fairly painful two years dealing with them.

Worst job ever is probably the one I am currently in.

There is a recurring theme in the NHS of job descriptions not keeping up to date with the role and my last job was no exception. I got told when I was starting that the JD was being reviewed. Turned out to be a while lie and it finally got reviewed three days before I left as HR wouldn’t allow management to advertise for my replacement on such an old JD.

In my new job, that I started in early 2025, I was aware that the JD had not been updated since 2008! I was given the opportunity to work with my line manager and update it. That was completed in late June. Now, just over one year later it still hasn’t been reviewed and today I have had to raise a grievance on the matter. First time ever I have had to do such a thing.

Why does your job description really matter surely you do something resembling your job description?
It's an old workplace joke to say "that's not in my job description" but we suck it up and get on with it?!🤔🤣

If it isn't in your job description youre likely not paid or even trained to do it. If they wanted me to shovel someone else's sheet id want paying the extra.

I have been working with out of date JDs for almost my entire career but this one is so far out of date, and there was an agenda by the person that it was written for, that it is simply not worth the paper that it was printed on.

I’m doing the job as it needs to be done in 2026. The annoying thing is the delay in getting the revision over the lime, I learned only yesterday, is that it currently comes out two pay bands higher than I am
on at the moment, so HR won’t approve it.

I’m very likely going to be retiring in around little over two years and I want to leave the board in the best place can but that will be undone quickly if they don’t have an updated JD as they will never be able to attract the right person with the one that I currently have.

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.
I spent a few days working as a bank messenger in the city in 1983. A worse bunch of ... er ... contemptible people I have never had the misfortune to meet.

Post- A levels, over 30 years ago, temping at a large refuse site picking dry cardboard for recycling. Often stripped off before driving home and the smell was tough to wash off after a day of it. Always found lots of medical waste. Still, earned me a few quid and made me realise the value of hard work.
