Give Spain some credit. Their defence nullified the French.

Yes, I do. I thought Spain, in the 1st half played too much like the ole England team ie passing sideways and backwards, rarely having a go. However, what they did worked.
I still say France was disappointing even though I was rooting for Spain.

Wasn't it Spain, and Pep in particular, who developed Tiki-taka?
Depends on how you define "old" but the "old" English way imo was hoof it forward.

Spain were the better side. After watching them against Belgium I expected them to have a better chance than most pundits, but I'm still surprised that they nullified the French so well!

Bit of a weird incident. Yamal totally took his eye off the ball and led with his shoulder.
I'm glad they didn't win just with that penalty. IMO it wasn't remotely a foul in the spirit of the game, and a "sensible" ref could have awarded handball against Spain.

and a "sensible" ref could have awarded handball against Spain.

really ??> despite the fact it didn't hit anywhere near the defined (in the laws of the game) area of the arm it has to hit to possibly be a handball???

It was defo a foul, despite Yamal pretty much being on his way down as he got kicked. You could argue he was taking defensive/ protective action as he could see the defender was taking a wild swing at the ball.

really??>

Yes, really!! :-) it's not important, but if you imagine the same incident before replays from 4 angles and VAR, if the ref gave handball and said "Sorry Yamal, you delibreately played the ball with your upper arm, not the (permitted) shoulder area, that's handball."
... everyone would have shrugged and got on with the game. Just one of those things.

The ref agrees with you, so I know it's pointless me arguing here!
BUT: it's clear to me the defender did nothing wrong. He made a legitimate attempt to play the ball. He could not have intended to kick a player that he wasn't aware of. He wasn't reckless.

It's a foul by technicality! :P

incompetence isn't a mitigating factor. the laws are based on actions not intentions. Its a foul based on facts.
In a similar, manner accidental handball is now a handball full stop. I disagree with a lot of it, its making the game worse, but they are the laws of the game.

Quansah didn't intend that his leg would end up on top of the ball that would cause his studs to come up and contact the Mexican player. it was still a foul and a red card though...

With both the Spain one and the England one, I can see reasons why they could be given, and reasons why they might not be. I don't think any of the decisions would have been obviously enough wrong for VAR to consider it a "clear and obviuos error", so should not have overturned whatever decision the ref gave.

I have my recently found triple nut, monkey nut on hand as my lucky charm for tonight's game. I'm presuming triple monkey nuts are as rare as a four leaf clover, so it should by rights hold mystical powers!!🤔🧐🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
