If there's one thing the last sixty years should have taught us it's that World Cups are bloody hard things to win, so third place is worth fighting for even though it is only a consolation prize. Fast forward another sixty and the remaining one or two of this team may well be getting held up as members of the most successful England side in living memory.

I think those of a certain age have resigned themselves to not seeing England win another World Cup in their lifetime. My 85 year old neighbour said his happiest memories of watching football for 70 odd years is when Burnley won the league/champions of England in 1960 and England won the World Cup six years later, adding that he's now given up on hoping to see such events happening again. Burnley winning 'the league' yes, but England winning a World Cup🤔....mmm, maybe not.😏

It's been pointed out to me that teenagers have never experienced anything other than England being quite good and Germany being rubbish.

Dream scenario is Bellingham coming on and putting in a couple of goals to save the match and my fingernails, and Mbappe’s efforts from tonight being enough to deny Messi the Golden Boot.
