Much debate as to whether it should have been allowed or not. I guess if it was one of our players who did it, it would be genius but as it is the goal should not have stood and the miscreant never allowed near a football pitch again!

I think the rules were made fairly clear and precise when Nigel Clough Gary Crosby err... "used his head" (headed the ball off the goalies palm as the keeper was about to drop it to boot it)

It seems the main debate is whether the scorer should have stayed off the pitch for so long "hiding" behind the goal before coming back on

IMO "ethically" it's a dodgy trick, BUT not sure there's any rule/law against doing that?

That is a very different case. You aren't allowed to interfere with eth goalkeeper releasing teh ball from hand and kicking it. But once the ball is on the ground, rolling, it is normal football.

The question here is whether what he did could fall under "unsportsmanlike conduct". Some people think he needed to ask permission from the ref before re-entering the field, but that is not the case when he has left the field as part of normal play, and the rules don't say you can't delay before re-entering.

Whether delaying to gain an advantage is unsportsmanlike conduct is down to the opinion of the ref, and in this case, he obviously didn't think it was.

... but players frequently run past the goal-line to avoid being offside - thus "gaining an advantage".

I was under the impression - especially from watching the recent World Cup, surely the pinnacle of football skill, sportsmanship and refereeing - that players are no longer bound in any way by sportsmanlike conduct.

No, his leaving the field of play was a normal part of the play, his momentum carried hijm across the line. So it certainlyt isn't "leaving teh field of play to gain an advantage".

The advantage was gained by not returning immediately, but the rules don't say you have to.

That's one way of looking at it I suppose, and it was a pretty spectacular implosion.

Realistic fans of Scottish football would accept that we're very much a second tier league on the European stage. Unfortunately Celtic fans aren't particularly realistic, or forgiving, so I suspect there will be calls to get rid of the board (again).

Appointing O'Neill was a mistake, but fair play to him for shouldering responsibility tonight.

Again, that's one way of looking at it.

He said he didn't want to carry on, and who can blame him? The grief Old Firm managers get is next level, from their kids getting threatened to being posted bullets...

A season rolling contract works for everyone, but despite O'Neill's past achievements with the club it's not exactly a forward thinking appointment. But then their board are eejits who will basically do anything to appease the short-termism of the Green Brigade by buying fancy foreign imports rather than investing in the future of the club, and as a result Scottish football.

Real football. We have Tony Mowbray back at Ewood. A proper manager. I feel Rovers are in safe hands. Kudos to the Boro fans who applauded when Mowbray was introduced to Ewood before the game. A hero at both clubs.

Rovers managed to beat a very, very good Middlesbrough side 2 - 1. I feel sure Boro will be up there at the end of the season. Rovers? Last season we might have caved in during the last few minutes. Not yesterday. Three excellent chances went begging in the first half, with a striker it might have been 3 - 1 at HT instead of 0 - 1. This will be our downfall. No striker of real quality.

One of the most interesting aspects of the game was Mowbray's reaction to Boro substitutions. Each time Hellberg made subs, six in all, Mowbray immediately reacted and brought on our subs to counter this.

A good game. Looking forward to Tuesday and the rest of the season.

A proper manager and hopefully some proper football.

Whilst is was disappointing to lose as a Boro fan, losing to a Mowbray team softens it a bit.
I gather that despite taking the lead and dominating possession we didn't create the best chances, so Blackburn deserved the points.
