Ferry booked overnight Fri and 4.30 on Saturday. Also reserved a seat in the lounge.

Anyone fancy me as a room sharer in the French hotels/BnBs?

yes i agree that is a very good idea.
i think most hotels are now concentrating on christmas. when that is out of the way i think there may be some good deals to be had. from what i have seen there are not many deals around at the moment if you want to book in the middle of next year. Accor have sent me an offer for the christmas period but nothing beyond then.
and as soon as i hear anything at all i will post it on here, obvs.
the train tickets back to Caen may only be bought 3 months in advance so i suggest we all get ready to buy tickets on the first morning that we can do so.
in the meantime, peeps may care to find "roomies".....

I had a thought, checked it out....SNCF do group discounts. Makes more sense, n'est pas?

I went into my local W H Smith yesterday - equipped with all the vouchers and tokens they issue - and added to my map collection.

I'd recommend the Michelin Local (yellow) maps at 1:150,000. Six maps cover the entire trip:
  • 303 Calvados, Manche (you may already have a copy from last year's Normandy jaunt)
  • 310 Mayenne, Orne, Sarthe
  • 317 Indre-et-Loire, Mainte-et-Loire
  • 316 Loire-Atlantique, Vendée
  • 324 Charente, Charente-Maritime
  • 335 Gironde, Landes
I'll also have the Blay-Foldex Atlas Routier France in the van and a satnav although, when I drove a white van hired in Caen in September to support a ride from Caen to Cannes, it came with satnav built in so that my Franglais includes useful phrases like "Prenez la deuxième gauche!" and the like.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
From memory, about 8 IGN 1:100,000 will also do the job. As well as being aesthetically much more pleasing cartography than the Michelin maps they also have the advantage for cyclists of contour lines.

The 1:100,000 IGN ones have done sterling service in the past and those are the ones I have for the trip. It may, or may not, be the case that photocopies of the area we may cross might be available for the trip....
And the White Van will have a satnav: I'll bring mine so Ian can be told where to go in English.
