A short update:
Gordon and I today met Alex, who is an original Friday and is coming on the recce and room sharing with his mate. Alex is even more fluent in French than je suis, parce-ce il et married a une Frenchwoman. C'est tres handy, is that.
We talked the route through, and discussed the opportunity of splitting the recce into two in a few places where we think the route might be able to offer something special (riverside picnic, maybe an additional optional long thrash at the end of the day for the faster riders, shade from trees on a hot day, protection, from a stiff south-westerly). More later on how that works out.
Alex also suggested that I look at the possibility of using bubble wrap to protect the bikes on the return trip. Since everything else he said seemed sensible, I'll do that. He said the return trip of the Dunwich Dynamo put the bikes owned by an entire coachload of riders into one van. The bubble wrap in its rolled state was huge: the size of a grown man and large bubbles in thick plastic. It suggests the bikes would be more protected from scratches. This would be instead of the wooden rack thingy, and I will be asking @
Charlotte, who organised it, how it worked out. A quick
eBay search suggests it will be cheaper (which means you'll receive a slightly larger rebate from your contribution to the van costs). And it might be better. So I'll look at that.
