Minor update of no importance, but I thought you might like to know anyway.....
Today I have mostly been wearing a frown, as I calculate how many bikes will fit in a Renault Trafic Master van, which has a load area 1.58cm wide and 3.03cm long.
The answer, which I reached by dragging all my bikes out of the shed and messing about with them, and using geometry learnt in the mists of time, is 16 on the bottom layer. They fit with eight next to each other, facing the direction of travel, and it is possible to fit a second row behind, because the wheels should interlock with those of the front row by 80cms (if not we can take the wheels off). The plan is to put the steel frames here and if there are any carbon frames, they can sit horizontally across the top of the others. With 100 metres of bubblewrap and everything tied down with blue polypropylene rope, it should work a treat. So the number of bikes going north after the ride will fit into that van OK. If there is a late influx of riders then we can hire a Luton body van, as we did on LonJog, and I will build a wooden frame as we did then, on which 50 bikes will go in two levels. The wider Luton body allows the bikes to go sideways, which they won't do in a Trafic. So the decision on which van to book will be made just after the recce. The cost is more or less the same, but the smaller van is much easier for Ian to drive and park, and the motorway tolls are group 2 (rather than group 3 for the larger van).
The significance of all this is that we could take a few more riders. While I'm quite happy with the numbers we have now, and also think we're a pretty good group personality-wise, I reckon we could take a few more. (But not a lot more. Some of the villages we stop at for coffee would struggle to get us all feed and watered in a short time.)
