Back in the mid 90's I was playing around with the idea of flywheel power on bikes for energy storage, and also looking at 'clock springs' as well. The flywheel is a heavy lump to cart around whereas a large 'clock spring' would be lighter and could also be wound up whilst stationary if on a recumbent trike.

In the end I figured that not having anything added would make the bike more efficient.

Lets start with the 15 lb flywheel......

I don't see it being a rip roaring success unless you lie in a billiard table flat region.

To be fair, the inventor is looking ultimately at developing the use of flywheels in cars to increase efficiency and is not trying to reinvent the bike. A bike is simply the platform for learning more about flywheels and he even mentions the slight problem of 15lb of extra weight in the form of a spinning wheel between your legs. I liked the way he had integrated it with variable gearing.
