My mum's the chair of the friends of the Royal South Hants hospital in Southampton and was involved in the naming ceremony for the Mary Seacole wing.

They sent out press releases well beforehand and the Southern Echo duly sent a reporter to cover it. My mum had the following conversation with her;

Why's it called the Mary Seacole wing?

In recognition of her work in the Crimean war

What war?

The Crimean

Never heard of that one, how do you spell it?

C R I M E A N

Right, thanks. So what time's she getting here?

Who?

This Mary Seacole

I'd blame the schools - my guess is that the Crimean war is no longer covered, but even an ill educated Journo may have heard of her colleague, a certain Ms Nightingale.

Priceless!

I have to say, I don't think I ever 'did' the Crimean War at school. But I do at least know vaguely when it was, (like to the right century, I think), thanks to simply keeping my eyes and ears open and learning stuff out of school. Too many people these days seem not to have any general knowledge...

Give her the co-ords of somewhere in Crimea. Plus a fictitious address. Tell her to key them into her satnav, and drive over there if she wants to do an interview with the woman herself.

That'll keep her quiet for a bit... :biggrin:

I didn't do it either, but I know that it was round about 1853 - 1854, there was The charge Of The Light Brigade and that the battle of Sebastapol shares its date with Agincourt in 1415(?) and some battle in the Pacific in 1944. October the 15th (I think).

Oh yes, and they all wore balaklavas :ph34r: ....and it was in the Ukraine.

I'm surprised the Echo keeps going. Even for a local paper its exceptionally vapid and quite regularly bends the truth to get a headline. I would call it a joke paper, but its not even funny. It just falls into the 'so bad its bad' category.
