Im watching this on tv right now...for ...oooh...the 1000th time....doesnt say much for modern day tv imho if this is still the best thing on...great film...just goes to show the bicycle was always the best way to escape anything!

i would love to digitally redo this film and have McQueen clear the 2nd row of barbed wire... but not tell anyone it had been redone... then show it on xmas day, usual time after queenie's chat. imagine the scene in houses across the land.

There was a documentary on a while ago where they went to the site of the POW camp where the real escape was done, fascinating stuff, they were very ingenious and very clever.

I just never felt interested enough to bother watching it! (Given some of the awful films that I have bothered to watch, that could be slightly odd ...)

It was a Christmas tradition that we all sat around watching TGE every year. I haven't seen it for a good decade or more. I might well watch it next time its on. I rather like it.

I managed to catch the last 20 minutes or so last night - Paul Newman didn't make it over the wire, Jim Rockford crashed the plane, wee Hughie fae Croasroads got shot trying to scale the wire, Telly Savalas got trapped when the tunnel collapsed and Laurence Olivier was a pompous git.

Yup, me too.

I used to love it as a lad, partly because Musselburgh was mentioned and I grew up there. Oddly enough I now live about half a mile from Hamilton racecourse.

I used to have a neighbour (a retired country canon) whose brother had been awaiting his turn at the entrance to the tunnel when the alarm was raised. He had a ticket with a number on it, but never entered the tunnel.

I find it so hard to attach these epic tales to real, human life.

I never met the brother, but I recall a deeply touching tale of his return to the family after the end of hostilities. He'd been shot down a couple of years earlier, which is quite a long toime to be away.

One of our sons watched a part of it yesterday and seemed nonplussed by the lack of explosions and car chases.
