I did the Heaphy and the Routeburn, many years ago. A bit of googling suggests they've changed quite a bit. Seeveral of the huts I stayed in had a couple of wooden bunk beds and an open fireplace and that was your lot. There'd be a pile of logs and an axe too: the etiquette was that you split and brought in enough logs to replace the ones you used before moving on in the morning.

I'd love to do this, but I don't think I could've done nine in nine even then, and as for now...
