You obviously missed post 14, but interesting that we both mention the terrible cover version.

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. I actually like Johnny Cash's cover best, but you would have to be almost entirely comatose to smooch to it. Here's Roberta Flack. A great love song.

Wrote by Ewan Macoll, wasn't it? (Kirstys dad, for Peggy Seeger)

Ok, that's freaky. I saw the thread title and that song immediately came to mind, thinking that'll fox 'em.
Love it, particularly with the unconventional structure rather than verse, chorus, verse, chorus, middle 8, verse, chorus!!

It's one that stuck with me too, I first heard it on Mark Radcliffes radio show

The glorious Tindersticks again

Let's not make it into a big thing
Let's not get lost in this I know it is,
I know we could I guess we surely would
Let's pretend it's not
It doesn't mean a thing...

Let's not blow it out of all senses
As though it meant so much
It's always thought about for weeks
Not everytime your lips meet mine, I think of her
But when her hands reach out, I think of you

Only death, stopped this love

He said "I'll love you till I die"
She told him "you'll forget in time"
As the years went slowly by
She still preyed upon his mind

He kept her picture on his wall
Went half-crazy now and then
He still loved her through it all
Hoping she'd come back again

Kept some letters by his bed
Dated nineteen sixty-two
He had underlined in red
Every single "I love you"

I went to see him just today
Oh, but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away
First time I'd seen him smile in years

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

You know, she came to see him one last time
Aww, and we all wondered if she would
And it kept runnin' through my mind
"This time he's over her for good"

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

Dwight Yoakham wrote/sang his own, magnificent, take on this;
Johnsons Love

Smokin Joe

Legendary Member

As sung by the writer, the Alabama Wildman himself, "the Snowman!"

Six foot six he stood on the ground weighed two hundred and thirty five pounds
But I saw that giant of a man brought down to his knees by love

He was the kind of man that would gamble on luck
Look you in the eye and never back up
But I saw him cryin' like a little whipped pup because of love
Can't see it with your eyes hold it in your hand but like the wind that covers our land
Strong enough to rule the heart of any man this thing called love
It can lift you up it can let you down take your world turn it all around
Ever since time nothing's ever been found stronger than love

Most men are like me they struggle in doubt
They trouble their minds day in and day out
Too busy with livin' to worry about a word called love

But when I see a mother's tenderness as she holds her young close to her brest
Than I thank God this world's been blessed with a word called love
Can't see it with your eyes...
