Eddy Merckx for me.

The Virtual Musette's comparison is a good one, (I've posted it before) and he's given his scoring methodology so you can decide how fair it all is as well. His top 50 can be found here; http://www.thevirtualmusette.com/posts/2009/3/17/the-top-50-dave-brinton-art.html

There's tons of great historical information on the site too, it's well worth browsing.

Nominations for British Cycling Hall of Fame closed yesterday. 50 cyclists are to be inducted at a Gala Dinner in February.

I (and I few others I know) nominated George Berwick. If he gets inducted he'll probably cycle to the event - actually, knowing George, he'll probably be too busy out on his bike to bother going, and wouldnae meet the dress code anyway.

My list would include beryl Burton, Coppi, Merckx, and of course the aforementioned Mr McNasty-McBerwick (and he writes beautiful prose as well).

if we're talking cycling achievement, then it's difficult to see beyond Merckx and Burton. I'd like to introduce another category, that of the playboy cyclist. Step forward Hugo Koblet, Fausto Coppi and Louison Bobet.

And Oscar Plattner. The man who, in a state of engorgement, could accommodate seven budgies, "provided the last one stood on one leg".
which reminds me to re-read 'A Spoke in the Wheel' by Les Woodland. A classic. Where are the 'Thighs' Sweetings, the 'Back Wheel' Ambroses or the Amanda Lightbody's de nos jours?

What about Raymond Poulidor? Alright, I know he never won the TdF but he had a very long career finishing second. And he gave Anquetil a run for his money at times too.
