It is indeed a beautiful-sounding instrument, but surely the harmonica would have been a better choice.

Mrs Vernon blanched when I jokingly ( I was half joking) mentioned that I was considering adding a harp to my Uilleann pipes and low whistle. Like Julia mentioned they are unwieldy so I'd settle for a hammer dulcimer.

Here's Carolan's Concerto to get you going. It remains a target for me to be able to play it as anything resembling a normal speed on my Uilleann pipes without fluffing any notes.

My friend at school had one and used to drive it around in a 2CV with the seats taken out. Not a 2CV actually - the next one up, still made of tinfoil but slightly different. She's now a professional harpist and does music for silent films as well.

We have two harps, a nineteen string and a twenty nine string, both made in the USA by Stoney End. I think Hobgoblin still stock them in the UK. The smaller harp is a little limited, they are both lever harps, so accidentals are possible mid tune. The large harp is still smaller than a double bass and the other is not much larger than a dreadnought guitar. Playing slide harp is brilliant, check out Joanna Newsome.
O' Carolan's music was introduced to me by a musician friend many years ago, Joe plays classical guitar and his version of Planxty Irwin is well known around here. I manage a reasonable bluff at it on cittern . . .
