My friend brought this back with them from the US, and I had a chance to watch it last night.

What a film. Set in the deep south and covering a story about the civil rights movement. It is a book of fiction, but based loosely around the life experiences of the author (Kathryn Stockett) as she grew up in Jackson Mississippi, and dug around in the issues of segregation and exploitation of the black domestic servants at that time.
The film follows the story of a young white woman of privilege who gets a job as a 'domestic tips' column writer in a local newspaper in the early 60's, and feeling a strong sense of injustice as to the manner which her parents and friends treated their maids and housekeepers persuades a few to give a rendition of their experiences of servitude which gets turned into a book, and subsequently becomes a best seller which rocks the local society to its core.
It made me happy and angry to watch it, and was a compelling and entertaining yarn.

It grossed over $200 milion last year in the states, and understandable after watching it, I can see why. It's out on DVD in the UK next month, and needs to go on your must see list. 9/10 from me :becool:

The book is really good too. I haven't seen the film yet, so looking forward to it coming out on DVD.

That's a bit generous for a one-idea story with minimal character development - I didn't think it was as good as The Artist, for instance. IMDb gives it a more realistic 8/10.

But The Help is light years ahead of Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, which is noisy drivel for the simple-minded. Put that straight on your must-miss list.
