The high speed left hook

This is a fast downhill section on my commute and here I am traveling close to or at 30mph. This driver, instead of keeping to the limit hears the voices, 'MUST PASS CYCLIST' and does so, despite the fact that he is turning left just ahead....

This is definitely one of my commute 'problem junctions'....;)

I was honestly expecting a lot worst. Not the best anticipation (or patience) from the driver, but certainly could have been a lot worst.

Highly annoying more than anything.

I mention at the end of the video that it doesn't look too bad. However, anyone who knows that junction would know that he took that corner too fast, and that I would be traveling fast as well.

You must admit though, he had the 'MUST PASS CYCLIST' monster on his shoulder!

Oh, bad driving for sure, and definitely had to get past a cyclist. When I first saw the video I was worried that it was going to be a very, very last moment left hook where you barely had enough time to react. Glad it wasn't! : )

Certainly a lot of people could do with looking ahead a bit before doing a manoeuvre and just thinking through what will happen (at times I'm sure we're all guilty of this, to some degree).

Is that the same junction that the car pulled out on you a few weeks back? Not a nice one at the best of times. Too many impatient drivers going both ways.

Yes. There is an internal note against this junction marked, 'treat with care'.

Ever try to goad them? Perhaps take a stronger primary than you need, just as you come up to a traffic island? Hmm? Maybe try and get them to pass as you approach a traffic light queue?

No, no reason, just asking....

Sorry TI, I don't quite follow. Are you suggesting I take a stronger position here? I'm not sure that would have made any difference.

Or are you asking if I had a run in with this driver earlier? Definitely not. I hadn't seen him until that moment.

You might want to think about wiping some speed off as you progress towards that junction (and use life savers on the approach) as you've got potential threats coming from behind at speed (left hooks) and ahead at the junction itself (vehicles pulling out).

Believe it or not, I have wiped some speed here. The hill is quite steep and I could certainly go faster. With regards to cars pulling out of the junction I have already worked out an escape route turning left into the junction as a last resort. I'll be keeping that one in my back pocket.

Lifesavers are always good, but due to the curve of the road I am very aware of what is behind me in the right hand lane. Of course, I'll be keeping an eye out there. On this occasion this chap was in full view, and I did have it covered. It was just a stupid and annoying maneuver.

No, I asked whether it had occurred to you, it has certainly occurred to me on occasion - I'd love to see some of the twunts pile into an island or rear-end a traffic queue.

Ah! I see!

No I've never thought much about that. They are quite capable of messing up themselves without my help! ;)

I did see one livesaver check, though you could perhaps have done one (or another) a little earlier. No loss in speed though, not until you're at the junction and the road changes to uphill.

If you're doing nearly 30mph on the approach, I'd rather be closer to 20mph, particularly if you're planning a bail-out/emergency left (don't forget most drivers will think you are probably doing closer to 20 mph, not 30mph). Have you practiced this escape route at speed? (most people overestimate their cornering ability). If not, I'd recommend a dress rehearsal, as you will struggle to take the bend at that speed.

BM,

You'll have to trust me on this one, but I did a LS check just before the clip starts (as the van draws level with me). I wasn't slowing down, but more importantly I wasn't speeding up. Unchecked as you come around that bend you will speed up frewheeling, so I was on the brakes at that point.

Origamist, funnily enough I have taken that corner at speed before, (not 30mph admittedly), probably about 20-25mph, when the road was quiet.;)
