The "I pay tax and insurance" situation

Today, on my ride out, I had a woman pull out infront of me, causing me to brake suddenly.

I decided to just have a little word with her as she scared me half to death. She stopped outside a shop (which she later went into). The following is what was said:
Me: Excuse me, excuse me.
(had her window shut so couldnt hear me)
(I then knocked on the window and she wound it down)
Me: Excuse me, did you see me when you pulled out?
Her: Yes why?
Me: Well its just that it was very stupid of you to pull out like that as you caused me to have to brake.
Her: Well I pay tax and insurance so I have right of way on the roads, not a bike.
(She then gets out of the car and starts walking towards the shop)
Me: Excuse me, I pay tax and that does not mean that you have right of way.

She then ignores me and goes into the shop. I decide to wait around and carry on the conversation but get bored of waiting and just ride off.

She wasnt agressive in any way but it was the fact that she was just plain stupid that annoyed me so much.

It really isn't worth speaking to people like this. I've been there done that and they don't learn.

I think most people who cycle are like me and also have a car so do pay tax and insurance not that it makes any difference about who has the right of way.!

Well I am going to put the video up in a min so you can see for yourself who had right of way.

I dont have a car but everyone pays tax on anything they buy and I have insurance on the bikes in my household.

All roads except some trunk roads and all motorways*, are paid for out of council tax. Cyclists pay council tax, so whether or not they own a car, they are paying for the roads. Regardless of who's paying for what, there is no excuse for any road user to behave in a dangerous, irresponisible, or inconsiderate way to others. Oh, but of course, she has right of way because she pays tax and insurance. Moron.

I suggest you ask the motorist for their insurance details so that you can inform the insurers that the driver is trying to cause an accident because they think being insured entitles them to.

You can check if a vehicle is insured using this website and you can check if vehicle excise duty has been paid here. You need make, model, and reg. number.

(*These are paid for out of general taxation, of which Vehicle Excise Duty is a tiny proportion.)

BTW there is no such thing as right of way on the public roads. It's known as priority.
The rules in The Highway Code do not give you the right of way in any circumstance, but they advise you when you should give way to others. Always give way if it can help to avoid an incident.

Leave the bonehead to it, ditto what gaz said and what i've learned to do. Even if you printed out the highway code and spoke till your head turned blue the cog's still wouldn't turn in their little brains.

Had similar today someone pulled out without looking almost had me off the bike, shouted and in shocked swore at them.
They then proceeded to break in front of me all the way up the road with nothing in front they looked the prat as I just kept back.
I have decided in future not to say anything and dickheads on the road get on with it. Its not worth the hassle and one day I am going
to shout at the wrong person.

Kind of correct, 'the right of way' is the right/privilege to use a public highway. It however has absolutely no relevance to who has priority on a given space of road.

Only response that's likely to change her approach:

"Do you realise how much it'd cost you to repair your paintwork if I hadn't been able to brake in time?"

In a similar situation I've has the last word (if not satisfaction) with 'what puzzles me is that you don't look stupid'.

I once asked whether they had coffee in a pub, then pointed out that they did not pay alcohol duty on their coffee, so wouldn't be entitled to a seat or to use the toilets - all the facilities paid for by the drinkers.

Absolute nonsense of course - but as were the road tax claims

I wonder what she would have said if you said, "Would you have pulled out in front of a steam roller like that because they also don't pay 'road' tax and by your logic you have right of way".
