I once asked whether they had coffee in a pub, then pointed out that they did not pay alcohol duty on their coffee, so wouldn't be entitled to a seat or to use the toilets - all the facilities paid for by the drinkers.

Absolute nonsense of course - but as were the road tax claims

That analogy doesn't really work as pubs are private businesses, so it is not taxes that go into the upkeep of the facilities but the profits from the drinkers, alcoholic or otherwise. If you want to use the toilet in a pub in passing and don't intend to stop to purchase anything it is polite to ask permission first.

You're missing the point

Cunobelin's argument is as much a nonsense as the "I pay road tax" thing, and would get the idiots in a tangle mulling it over in their minds.

Perhaps if we all clubbed together and payed for one of those billboard poster campaigns along the lines of "Nobody but nobody pays Road Tax" and then another one saying "It's called VED and it depends on your vehicles emissions* which means you don't own the road".

*Can't think of a word that some of the population would understand but if you can think of one feel free to insert it.

It's not worth even arguing right of way. Done it once - last year.

Long traffic queue from Cheadle to Gatley (before A34 lights) as the locals will know. Filtering down the outside of traffic, as it's WIDE (WIDER than MY ASS) and and came up to a "Do NOT ENTER FILTER" box - driver from opposite direction thought they had right of way to turn in - not when a bike (cycle or motor) was approaching.

Anyway, in my personal style, I out faced the turn (means do not point a car at me - you WILL lose). She stopped, I stopped, and said, "you don't have right to turn over on-coming traffic" - she was "that says keep clear".... I asked if she would have done that with a motorbike...yadda yadda. Leave it folks, just ride on.

Anyway - it's not worth an argument. :becool: Ride on. !

What even many cyclists don't seem to realise, is that far from 'not paying roadtax', we actually subsidise the motorist out of our own pockets!

Roads are paid for out of income tax and council tax. Roads for mass motoring are far more expensive than they might otherwise have to be. I am paying for that, even if I don't own so much as a skateboard. Far from the motorist paying through the nose and the cyclist getting away with paying nothing, every motorist is being subsidised by every cyclist, every time they turn a key in the ignition.

All this is of course too counterintuitive to communicate in a roadside slanging match

. But it shows that we shouldn't be at all shy about taking this one on, whether we also own a car or not.

Which is why so many of my counterintuitive arguments are summarised by a simple summary of most complex arguments, couched in terms even the simplest of motorists can understand. It has taken years of distilling "les mots justes" into a phrase that can be readily to hand in even the most stressful of situations. It doesn't take too much remembering so is useful when the chips are down, and is even designed so that passers-by can grasp the pithy nature of the exchange, often to be seen nodding sagely as teh words reverberate in their ears. The phrase?

And, most of us pay road tax - I have a car on the friggin drive that does not like being sat still, or on short drives, but it is the car that gets 4 bikes and stuff off on weekend breaks. !

I pay more in tax and sh1te on my car than they do per mile. Hence my Zero stance on that crap. I ride a bike because it is faster than traffic, and helps keep me fit without having to hiss about with a gym - !

Agree 110%

I argued a few times, but there isnt any point at all, I used to ride with someone who kicked off at every little incident, there wasnt any point, but it was good interval training, chasing after him chasing after a motor LOL

I generally only get this cr@p while commuting, when I already have my "speaking to children with special needs" head on. Which might explain why motorists get so frustrated with me, although sometimes there is little difference in the behaviour of my clients and the people who try to kill me or run me off the road.

One woman in a 4x4 the other day didn't take kindly to me trying to sympathise with her as to why she was so angry. I understand she'd made a poor choice when buying her vehicle and was possibly acting out of jealousy over my cheaper, cleaner, quieter and more economical mode of transport.

I think this site sums it up nicely, http://ipayroadtax.com/ should imagine it'll only take one personal confrontation with a "I pay road tax" driver for me to consider the jersey!

I've got the jersey. Unfortunately it does seem to antagonise some drivers. I try to wear it every day it is clean for my commute! :-)

That's an interesting website - and worth sharing. But there is something not quite right about the jerseys, which seem to be spreading the myths about car drivers, cyclists and road tax. They should be countering stupid arguments - saying "nobody pays road tax, it's called VED and based on emissions and roads are paid for by income tax!" Now that's a lot of wording to squeeze onto a jersey, I'll grant you so something a tad snappier would be better. Can't think of anything better off hand.
