Good thread. Moseley Shoals is a top album. I had The Stone Roses banging out the other day. 'I wanna be adored' - Squires letting rip while your on a bridleway is just the tonic. But if you really want to up the pace you can't beat Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power.

headphones whilst cycling = deathwish.

no two ways about it.
muppet behaviour o the highest order

Doesn't matter if it is Central London or the depths of Countryside - the risks are the same.

Rely !! I have listened to music with headphones while cycling for the last 23 years and not had one incident in which my life was put in danger and i ride both city and rural routes. I see no difference in listening to music on my cycle or in my car any distraction risk is the same.

Slightly OT but this reminds me of a few years ago. I sat opposite a lady at work called Susan Greenwood. We were chatting about the coming weekend and she mentioned she was off to New York to see her brothers' band play. So I'm thinking they're playing in some club or other...

Me: "Cool. Where are they playing?"
Susan: "erm...Madison Square Garden".
Me: "WTF! What's your brothers' band called?"
Susan: "erm...Radiohead"

It's then that the surname clicked.
Never got any free tickets though.

I sometimes listen to music whilst cycling using just the left headphone. Can still hear traffic - hasn't caused any problems.

Try listening to the new Prodigy album while cycling - it's awesome motivation music..

What a load of nonsense, depends how loud the music is. Listening to headphones at full blast is probably not a good idea, but how exactly does listening to music at a reasonably low volume constitute muppet behaviour of the highest order?

As long as you can hear traffic and sirens etc what exactly is the problem?

we'll agree to disagree, then.

Still think it is daft, and hard to justify.

Fair enough, everyones risk assessment will be different on this anyway, however as to justify it for myself, most people on this forum drive and most will do so with the stereo on, the distraction from this and other people in the vehicle can be vast, in a car you cant hear other traffic unless a window is open, when riding a cycle as long as you look where you are going use good observation before making a maneuver i see no difference in risk, as without observation you will hit or be hit by another road user whether your in a car or on a cycle, as for being able to hear other road users for some cyclists wind noise can cancel this out anyway which is why i use noise canceling headphones, My commute is long and i need something to listen to other than wind noise.
my ipod contains Blink 182, metallica, guns and roses, nine inch nails, slipknot, marilyn manson, ect

not heard of moseley shoals, ill look into that. on the old mp3 at the mo is, in no particular order, dark side of the moon, killers day and age, kings of leon, only by the night. dire straits alchemy, the aforementioned ocean colour scene, and ofcourse, in rainbows by radiohead......... all great stuff to cycle too...... takes your mind of the bloody headwind i rode into today..both ways...!!!!
