When I was a kid, I bought a record and there was a 'scratch and sniff' patch on the record sleeve that smelt of banana.

Can't do that with an MP3 download.

I have Melanie's 'Garden in the City' which still releases a floral aroma when scratched despite it being 41 years old.

I am so tempted to get a turntable and dig out my amps and speakers for my design studio/office. There is space for it all next to the laser printer.

And not to mention reading the sleeve notes and lyrics on album covers. Have you tried reading lyrics from a cd wearing headphones and reading glasses at the same time....bloody uncomfortable I can tell you.

About eight years ago, the enemy and owned a small it support company, one day we were asked by someone to take one young lad three days a week so he could claim his benefits. We had nothing for him to do really, but he was a good lad, keen, and handy with a pooter.

I had the bright idea of digitising my vinyl collection so I set the turntable up, sorted out the software and showed him what to do. He had ten albums to record. He set about this task with enthusiasm, then I had to go out for a meeting. I was out most of the day, but when I got back I asked him how he was getting on. "I'm on the last one he says."" Blimey! Says I, that was quick."" Yeah", says he "it's easy". "Yeah but how did you manage to them all so quickly?" says I. He shrugs. I thought about this for a moment. "have you recorded both sides?" says I. "what?" "both sides of the record?" " oh! I didn't know it had two sides!".

His enthusiasm waned a bit after that.

I still have all my vinyl, up in loft and it is all now on mp3. I was reminded of a another story from years ago, it's long so be patient.

As has already been said the album artwork back in those days could be as interesting or exciting as the music. I was given for my birthday one year the album Venus & Mars by Wings. It was a single vinyl record but it was in a double gatefold album, and the inner sleeve had a colourful graphic design on it too. Inside there were two large B&W poster plus two colourful stickers to put on...wherever really.

My best friend and I would often lend each other our vinyl record so that we could record them on to cassettes, which is what I did with this one. In fact he recorded two tapes, one for him and one for me. I left the album with him and I would collect it in a couple of days. I think it was the summer of 1976.

A couple of days later I went to collect the album and tape, and as I went round the back of my mates mums house, I saw his motor bike was outside, a blue Honda CB 175, which meant he was home. As I walked round to the door I had to pass the other side of his bike, and I noticed that he had the same two Venus & Mars stickers on the side panels of his Honda. Funny, I thought, he must have bought the album after all.

Anyway I went into the house, had a coffee, chewed the fat a bit then I asked if he recorded the album, he had, I said "why did you buy it"? "I didn't" says he. " "but you've got the stickers on your side panels" says I. Then I realised. He's only gone and knicked my stickers and put them on HIS bike. My gasted was flabbered! I could not believe his cheek, and quite frankly I was more than a little urinated off with him for it. Not only that he had put the two B&W posters up on his bedroom wall. Well I had them back a bit sharpish, still got them somewhere, but the stickers where buggered. He did apologise when he saw how upset I was, but I never let him forget it for over 30 years.

Anyway fast forward 33 &1/3 years, I was perusing the shelves of a British Heart foundation charity shop and low & behold there was a Venus and Mars album in vinyl. Not only that it was complete with the stickers and posters and the record and sleeve was in good nick too. £2.00 they wanted for it, I only snatched their hand off didn't I ? I paid the money and could not get out of the shop quick enough.

When I got home I phoned my mate, Wayne, and told him about it and we had a good laugh about it. I have the vinyl album here sitting next to me as I type this story. My best friend died last April of cancer 54 he was. I can't see the screen now for the tears.

I think it's only being lost in the mainstream pop crap world, the alternative scene has been focussing on improving the 'product' for about twenty years. The label that my own band is signed to puts out some really beautiful packages, each release has an incredible amount of time and effort poured into it. Lathe cut 7" in a hand knitted sleeve for example...

I've been pondering formats for a while now - I recently went to a music festival and was really impressed by some the bands I saw and really want to support them by buying their releases, but a CD (once ripped) will sit on my shelf and never get looked at and an MP3 download, whilst it will get listened to a LOT it doesn't really satisfy my itch.

I stopped buying vinyl around 1995 when it just became too difficult to find new albums on vinyl, but I still look at the all the lovely 12" singles and albums I bought up to that point.

so now would be great time to start again.

Vinyl sales are up massively (in relative terms) and in the last 12 months I've probably bought 40 odd albums, plus box sets of the Beatles (brilliant remastering and cutting), the Who (great box set and good cutting) and Black Sabbath (with reengineering by a duck TBH). Its now got to the point that I'm running out of storage space again
