Ah "pier today gone tomorrow".. just like LHC if we're to believe the doom mongers

It's certainly of note, that since the LHC was completed, there have been noticeably more pier fires than usual. Explanations?

Basically three reasons, the cross sectional area of collisions area is very small (picobarn)

There is a joke about hitting picobarn doors there !

I'm not entirely sure that's true. And darnit, I'm going to have to try and prove it....

OK. LHC started up 10 Sept, 2008.

Fires before then:

Worthing 1933

Rothesay 1962

Skegness 1985

West Pier Brighton 2003

Weston July 2008

Fleetwood 9th Sept 2008


Fires since then:

Hastings. 2010

So in fact, there was a small cluster of fires just before they started the LHC up, with several well before that, and only one since.

For values of 'nothing' up to and including: 'googling LHC for opening date, and then googling 'pier fire' and browsing first 7 pages of search results, and making notes on the back of an envelope' (yes, honestly, I found space among all my mChat calculations).
