"Young and Ex-whippet"
I had so many looks of awe and shock yesterday when I announced that I had cycled to college and was cycling home.

It was the first Tuesday that I had commuted by bike and I have a lot more people on my course than I do on a Monday (FT+PT in one class). My hours are 9am-8pm yesterday.
Other people on my course were just shocked that I was able (or mad enough) to cycle the 16miles in the morning and then the same distance home.

I have been commuting since September now and getting quite used to it (average speed is going up) and I was fortunate to have two good days of weather yesterday.

I am quite enjoying this commuting milarky.

I get funny looks when I tell people I go the long way home. "Why ?", "Because I can".

LOL was speaking to a fellow cycling commuter this morning. I see him a few times in the mornings as he lives near me. He was asking how far is my commute. I said 21 miles. He said that Orpington To Greenwich is not that far. I said no it's only 12 miles. I like a little extra every morning.
He just looked at me and called me a loony.

If you know what's good for you ...
I get the same looks when people learn that my return journey is 40 miles - and that's just from my wife! She keeps trying to find excuses for me not to take the bike. "Isn't it windy today?" "It looks cold out, doesn't it?" .... At work it's always the first thing anyone says to me: "Did you cycle to work today?" then "Oh, you are brave" or the one that really gets me "T'es sportif, toi!" Agh! When will people learn that the bike is a sensible and enjoyable way of getting to work in the morning?

I get it from other cyclists in the changing room. 'You cycle how far?'
I always have rather stilted conversations with other cyclists (normally only one other) in the changing room, whilst getting yer kit off/on...
"Starting get a bit nippy now, intit?"
"Yeahhh, time to get those thermals out."
"Odd sort of weather, tho. Cold in the mornings but still Ok on the ride back."
"Got far to go?"
"Only six miles."
"How long's that take yuh?"...bla bla bla

I love it when people ask me how far I commute.

I feel quite proud to say.."oh, about 20 odd miles depending on whether I take spin around Hyde park or not"...and then watch their response.

Lets be honest, its a massive ego boost.

Funny point though, two things I can almost always be sure of;

1. When you say you commute, the first thing they ask is " How far?"
2. When they see your bike, the first thing they ask is "can I pick it up?"

every time!

Edit, their third response (about 3 mins later) is nearly always ..."is that 20 *each* way"...Yeah Baby!
