Without naming names, although I am sure the truth will out eventually, I have become aware that a very experienced cyclist, indeed one, famous for the cleanliness of his drivetrain used WD40 as a chain lubricant this weekend.
I am sure if HM Bateman was alive today I am sure he would be tempted to produce one of his famous cartoons. "The cyclist who used WD40 on his chain" I can see it now, lycra clad cyclists of a certain age standing aghast at the very notion.

In short, I've got no idea what any of that means!

Myth: WD-40 Multi-Use Product is not really a lubricant.
Fact:
While the “W-D” in WD-40 stands for Water Displacement, WD-40 Multi-Use Product is a unique, special blend of lubricants. The product’s formulation also contains anti-corrosion agents and ingredients for penetration, water displacement and soil removal.
WD-40 and Bike Chains
Myth: WD-40 Multi-Use Product should not be used on bike chains.
Fact:
While WD-40 Multi-Use Product it is not a grease, it is formulated with strong lubricating oils and other ingredients, and is a terrific product to use for bike maintenance. It does not attract dirt or moisture to metal surfaces – just be sure to wipe off any excess WD-40 Multi-Use Product before riding. For long-term lubrication, a specialized bicycle lubricant may be used.

I would like to say in my defence was that Tim had dragged us through some of the muddiest lanes in Essex I have ever had the pleasure to cycle through.

80 miles in and the (dried) mud had taken it's toll.
It was only as we were passing a country cottage with a gentleman fiddling with his car that I stopped to ask if he had some oil I could use. He only had WD40.

So that's my story and I am sticking to it.
Yesterday the bike had a full strip down and clean. The chain was thoroughly cleaned including in-between the links with cotton buds... so there....

Name names or open a book. There's surely only one red hot favourite though.

Edit: Too late, he's 'fessed up.

I once had an ugly girlfriend. My excuse was when you can't get what you want you make do with what you can get. I guess it is the same for chain lube!
