The mind in willing but the legs are not !

Well I have been communting to work by bike for 3 weeks now, after a complete break from cycling for over 3 years.

I have thoroughly enjoyed it, but the first 2 weeks, I did 2 days bike wednesday off, bike rest of week. Its 17 miles each way and I can now do each way in an hour which I am pleased with, as I still have a few stone to loose.

Today was my third day on the trot, came to the first and only hill, over took everyone, but the thighs were screaming at the top of the hill, something I didn't expect

but as not to look like a girls blouse in lycra, I persevered and prayed for red lights !!

So tomorrow I really want to cycle to work again, but I think for my legs I will have a day off.

I must admit its been a brilliant 3 weeks, quite a stressful job, but the cycling takes all of that away, and its severly reduced my appetite so losing weight too.

Just thought I would share my thoughts today !

Well done, Kevin!

These 'small' victories build up into major achievements as you get fitter, faster, more confident, and more aware of improving your cycling technique.

Keep at it, and why not have a look out for a CC forum ride with a group near you.

I'm feeling your pain also. do 26 mile round trip commute and did it three days this week with a two day consecutively. I am now seriously trying not to be competitive and pace it out, especially as i have ascents on the last 3 miles back home.

But i miss it when im not cycling in, it is becoming an addiction.

bring on 4 days next week!! then the big 5 in a row the week after.

The worse thing is though, somehow i've managed to put on weight, and no, i'm not eating any more than usual, as read all the advice that it does make you hungry! and pushed against it, i definitely feel better for it though.

my ride is slightly shorter than yours, and i had the same issues, i would suggest taking the day off cycling tomorrow and let your body recover. You want to let your body recover to it's max when trying to push it and not half recover and then go out for another 30 + miles.

it took me just over a month and a half from going 3 days to a full 5 days and a weekend ride, and my legs hardly hurt. so i think it's best to take it easy.

Where are you cycling from and to in Cambs?

I cycle from Newmarket Road, out to St Ives via Girton, Oakington, Longstanton etc.

If you see a 40 year old looking like or trying to look like Lance Armstrong from the US Postal days, and panting like mad at traffic lights thats probably me !!!!
