I was suprised a while back when I watched Cee-Low Greens "Forget you" video late one night. They replaced "Forget" with the other "F" word, but still dubbed out the N word.

Was this drummed up for PR purposes? I doubt it. I've no doubt the explanation given - that otherwise the poor Americans would get all flouncy about it - is accurate. Does it matter? No, I wouldn't have said so. Things in historical films get changed all the time - they're movies, not documentaries.

And no offense, but the idea that '...if they change a basic like that, the film has no credibility as what else can they have changed?' is laughable. I very much doubt that the name of one of the lesser characters (!) will be one of the more significant liberties taken. The original film is hardly gospel - it is no doubt strewn with historical inaccuracies. Such films always are. And are none the worse for it.

(As an aside, I read somewhere recently that the whole dambusters event, played up massively for propaganda purposes, was in truth a total fiasco, militarily speaking. While the destruction of the dams certainly had some impact on German industrial resources, the effect was actually pretty limited. The famous bouncing bombs were never used again, not least because using them was so incredibly dangerous for air crews, and remaining stocks were quietly dumped in mid-Atlantic smetime after the war ended.)

I'm sure it'll be a cracker of a movie tho'! Woof, bro'.

Yes, I've heard similar. It was a fantastic episode of British inventiveness and use of very simple techniques (like the spotlight altimeter, and the forked stick gunsights), but it certainly didn't win us the war.

Also, the bombs in the original film were the wrong shape, since the actual plans were still classified. I don't think that knowledge makes the original film any less great, so changing the name of the dog and the codeword probably doesn't matter so very much.

Personally, I don't imagine the remake will be better than the original, even given up to the minute effects, and I imagine it'll be a fair bit worse.

I don't think historical facts, terms and names should be changed in any retelling of a factual historic story.
If the fim makers/audence/certification board want to change names and words then is should be sold as a fictional story based on real life events.

In terms of remakes I can imagine that Barnes Wallis would be an American, or would have gained the idea from a visiting American, or the spot lights and aiming sights would be devised by the all American crew flying the Lancs, and that all the low flying would be entrusted to Americans due to their crop spraying experience.

I once saw a program on Channel 4 about someone with Tourettes. Among his various ticks and shouts, he would [a] randomly spit food at people when he was eating, start shouting swear words whenever he went into a library and [c] say the N-word, repeatedly and really quickly whenever he saw black people.

Laugh? I nearly shat ...

Good gracious the world is full of softies. Its a dam!!! good job we had some lads and lasses made of sterner stuff in 1939-45.Because if Mr Hitler had won.The whole African race along with the Jews, disabled, mentally confused and all others inbetween would have been wiped off the face of the earth.
I might just nip!!!down to my local sushi bar tonight and have an evening out.Anyone want to complain about that.
Lets bring back some common sense. You want to see some racism go onto the sink estates of Leeds.Gipton,Belle Isle,Middleton,Seacroft.See the England football flags hanging from bedroom windows.Thats racism.

Do we really need another WWII film anyway? Especially a retelling of an old tale.

Don't want to disappoint you, but it was not a "tale", it was a true story, it did happen.

Lord of the Rings etc and other fictional stories, their tales

I've just been going through my kids' Latin text books, changings Ns to Ds.

A touch ironic to see some (albeit mild) anti-American comments on this thread.

Exactly, and it was as dull then as it is now with the same old crap spouted by the ignorant.

What a tragedy everyone isn't as devastatingly original and intelligent as you. Must come as a huge disappointment, that.

To be honest, I'd imagine the relatives of all concerned are just embarresed the dog was called that in the first place.

they didnt need the bombs later though, tallboy was working  . even the smaller anti ship ones, which were intended for turpitz werent used because they'd hit the ship with tallboys..

I also would be surprised if the new zealander producer jackson will have yanks in the film instead of oh new zealanders!
