Colin - thankyou for that. Do you think I should mention this to my sister-in-law, who has just spent a very expensive week in Finland north of the Arctic Circle hoping to see the Northern Lights, and didn't.......or should I just stay schtumm?
She could have stayed in Scarborough and seen them for a lot less on Sunday evening - although I think the photo shown on Look North was actually from the Primrose valley / Blue Dolphin area!

Puzzle game procrastinator!
Stuffed for tonight - thick cloud / fog forecast here! Oh well, next time I'm in Scotland perhaps ...

But for the cloud they'd supposedly be visible tonight (away from light pollution) around London.

Back in the 1980s, during a very severe solar storm, I saw them from Devils Dyke, near Brighton. Not as huge a display that far south as has been seen 'up north' this time, but still an incredible sight.

Fog here at the moment! So no chance without gaining height, and then there could be cloud cover.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

I was above the cloud (thick, low) and away from light pollution, and looking North, near London at about the time you posted this. I did look hard, but couldn't see anything bar a very very vague glow, which could frankly have been anything.
