The Olympic Spirit

I had a bit of the Olympic Spirit with me on the way home tonight. A new personal best on the (relatively) flat - up to 26.6 mph up a very slight gradient. I got up to about 26.8 down a very slight gradient after that but by that time I was tired.

Yay!

I'm sure I can beat it though. I'll pump my tyres at the weekend....

I'm oh so curious to know how fast (or slow!) I normally go on my commute. How much do those computers go for?

Still saving my pennies. I was in the LBS at the w/e admiring a Spesh Allez Elite. Had it not been chucking it down, I would've taken it for a spin.

Hope the price comes down when the new models come out...

I think I had a bit of it last night, the good weather helped too. I shot home at around 15mph (but my commute was only 6.6miles, and that was the extended version). I then went out on my Sirrus and did 33 miles, to my parents and back (16mph on the way there and 17.4 on the way back).

This is my bike:

My bike computer is a £15 one from Maplin, but I wouldn't recommend it. It works fine as a speedo, but to be honest I'd rather have a wired computer as then I wouldn't have to remember to turn it on, and I'd get a good record of how far I've actually cycled as it would turn on automatically any time the wheel was turned. Also, the total distance on my computer caps out at 999 miles, which is pretty shoot as I do that in 3 or 4 months.

Edit: Oh, I should say that I don't normally go that fast - normally on that stretch I'll go around 19 - 21mph. My average speed over the whole journey tends to be around 12.5 mph, but being through London there's a hell of a lot of traffic lights.

I bought a Topeak basic computer a couple of weeks ago, cost <£15 inc postage from ChainReactionCycles.

Apparently on the steep downhill into work I can top 33mph and on the long windy decent from British Camp I managed 39.5

Before I got into cycling I bought a Raleigh Echo (£15 now) to see if I liked bike computers. 6yrs later IME its been a very good robust computer (I use it on my commuter, it sees all weathers) and I like its ease of use/ display.

Edit: The only problem it's too accurate, says I'm too slow

In the Spirit of things..........

I ended up in a crazy team TT with another 'commuted up MTB' from the Aquatics Centre in Manchester all the way to Levenshulme- about 3-4 miles - bloody fast the two of us were going - 26-28 MPH....some ped shouted out 'Olympics' near the Hospitals - flying wasn't the word.........

I knew he was pretty quick when he accelerated fast out from the junction with the Aquatics Centre onto the A34, I just about passed him, then the TT started....great workout !!!

Obvious, Tim, but imagine the fastness if you got yourself a "second" fast bike as well as your hack commuter.

Sure you've earnt it by now!

Every man needs two bikes.

That's a good idea; only real problem is that four days out of five I'd need to have the child seat on the back...

I did watch the coverage today on BBC and i was filled with pride from team GB.

I was especially inspired by Chris Hoy, i admit it's the first time i have heard of him or seen of him.

Truly inspirational and amazing.

I guess you've got a bit of catching up to do on the track racing scene, but with luck you'll be filled with more pride when the GB team goes for some more results in todays races!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Woohoo! Got over 32mph on the same stretch of road today - very exhilarating, although I guess slightly cheating because I had a ruddy great tailwind... (and the bit I got that on is very slightly downhill)
