I know there are a lot of people who get to 50 and who are not blessed with good health

I think that's a good point and one which I think that many of these 'over 50' campaigns are attempting to address. Sure, there are fit as a fiddle wrinklies ;) around but it's the exception rather than the rule.

I don't think it's just marketing or targeting disposable incomes but, to be perhaps just as cynical, a health service trying to reduce its costs.

I remember when I signed on with my doctor here, he said I was at a "dangerous age" (I was 47). I was not offended, I knew he was speaking statistically and not about me personally. I was a little shocked to think of myself as getting older but it is a fact. So I tend to see the positive side to such 'get fit & healthy' campaigns since I can see just by looking around me that there are those in need of a bit of self-tlc.... and it's a gentle reminder to me as well not to become too complacent.

Good points and to be fair, I would genuinely like to know what exercise expectations I should have in my 50s, 60s, 70s and hopefully beyond. They are hardly going to stay the same but health advice for a category based on a 40 year plus age span is worse than useless.

You could be 55 and obese, reading one of these articles thinking that the most you could do to help yourself is diet, gentle walking and bowls. I wouldn't knock that because something is better than nothing but such advice can help to set low expectations when I know from my own experience, as a total non-athlete before the age of 49, that one can be capable of so much more.
