The Police do care / Proving a bike is yours

In Fareham this afternoon, two young lads trying to break a padlock with a screwdriver.

We stepped back into a doorway and were about to phone the Police when they arrived!

THe two had been spotted on CCTV and the PC despatched to have a word.

WHen I left he was explaining very politely that simply stating the bike was yours was not good enough and they would have to provide evidence.

So two thoughts....

Firstly good for the Police

Secondly if you were stopped could you actually prove that your steed is yours?

I couldn't prove ownership of my Ridgeback.

I paid £35 for it at a boot sale. That was a fair while ago though.

If I had my mobile phone with me, then I could show the frame number. I have all my frame numbers in there.

If that wasnt acceptable, then I doubt very much that I could prove it on the spot.

Not on the spot but the Boardman, Spesh & BeOne are all registered in my name at new bikes. The one that'd be hard is the fixie as that is a load of parts & the frame was bought at the local dump/recycling centre.

I have a receipt. The question was a trick used under the circumstances, since they were caught on CCTV trying to take it.

If they were able to think under pressure, then they would have simply said no, perhaps mentioning the bike sale, and then it would have become a case of the waiting game - with the actual owner.

I've got a note of all my frame numbers. One doesn't have a frame number but I have the receipt for it.

In the past a friend was messing round in a car park with my bike, the police stopped and questioned him (it was a mixte frame) and then came to find me and asked me to confirm it was mine.

Mine too...mine was an insurance pay out bike and I think they stuck the details on there for me (or I forgot that I'd already done it ).

I've written my name on there in UV too...but anyone could do that.

Of course, the police really do have better things to do than to quiz anyone on a bike.

Mine has a sticker for the bike shop it was bought from and they keep a record of all bikes purchased from there - plus it has their postcode stamped on the frame. (And they know me too - so could probably describe me over the phone).

I could later provide lots of photos..., also if it was at this time of year I would be able to provide the lights that fit the mounts on the bike (ok alot of lights fit a smart fitting but my BLT rear light would be more unusual).
