There's barely been a year gone by since my childhood when there hasn't been a "first panda born in captivity" story in the news. There must be loads of the bleddy things by now!!

On 10 September the zoo said that Tian Tian may have experienced a spike in a hormone called progesterone two weeks later than the results suggested, leaving the window for a possible birth open until next week.

It might be extraordinarily difficult getting pandas to reproduce, but it's worth the effort. Baby pandas are like toddlers in bear suits. They are even cuter than kittens, slow lorises and sleeping dormice.
