Now why would they want to do that? Even if they did, we still get clobbered with the VAT!!! And that is also going up in january, remember.

It is one of the great swindles of time... double 'taxation' on booze.
And fuel...but we're less bothered with that becasue we ride, yes?!!!

how much barley does it take to make a pint of beer?

Of far greater concern is the drop in Russian wheat harvests. If the price of bread rises for people who are hard-pressed at it is, there'll be hell to pay.

Bless you sweetie - climate change ultimately I think is to blame. You know how the press love to panic - probably won't be that bad. What about pasta??? OMG my vermicelli!

Beer is about £3.00 per pint in my local pub and about £1.00 per pint (OK a short measure) from my local shop.
All you really need to do is buy it from the shop and not the pub.
Worst case scenario is it going up to £1.03 per can but I would put money on still being able to get four cans for £3.99 when the vat goes up.

Surely the conviviality of a pub is worth it at least now and again? May be not in Basingstoke - does the White Hart opposite the police station still exist? Used to drink there when I was at school. Also worked at the Barley Mow in Oakley for a while - always had terrible beer.

OK, this is sad, but I just did a quick calculation. This website gives some numbers relating to American beer....

http://www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/aginfo/barleypath/barley&beer.html

In a nutshell, a metric tonne of barley will make thirteen thousand pints of beer. The current price for a tonne of barley is about £175.

The barley in a pint of beer costs 1.3 pence.

In the US, farmers are growing more corn (in view of bioethanol subsidies), so barley acreages are decreasing putting further pressure of barley costs.

I like the way they trace annual beer consumption back to acreage required to produce the necessary amount of barley!

Well to start that would be a pretty weak beer, probably needing a load of rice/maize to boost its sugar. also barley is ONE ingredient and contributes only one cost. so not as simple as that. why not drink beers that are made with British barley!
