I'll only have one evening ride a week, on Thursdays with a local quick group. Commuting with a round trip of just under 60 miles every day means I'm happy with just the one 'leisure' outing, normally around 40/45 miles, as I get everything I really need from the work trip.

I commute to work for the pleasure of cycling coupled with maintaining some fitness. I also take a day off at the weekend but use the other day as time for exploring or riding with friends etc. My daily commute distance is about 44 Kms so that keeps me happy and in good trim. This year the horrible four letter word (work) has reduced the commuting trips due to travel etc. but I still look forward to and enjoy MOST of the days I commute."!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I Have an 18km ride into work every day and can appreciate what you are saying. I bought a Koga Roadchamp and put Marathon Plus tyres and a rack on it. In the summer I often make my home trip 30-40km. I have been doing it for years and know every small road, farm track and forest track between work and home. The Koga is as tough as nails and will go anywhere.

I start work at 7am and often leave home at 5 am and have a quick swim in the sea and have breakfast on the beach before getting to work. The ride takes just over an hour. By the way, I live in Denmark, not California. The sea around here is not warm at 5 in the morning.

If I want to ride at weekends, one of the other bikes comes out.

Cycling is important to me and if it is important to you, you will make the time.
