Does anyone watch that program on BBC4 with James May? I find it quite interesting due to my engineering background. It also shows the ingenuousity of mankind ranging from every day simple things we take for granted to more complicated pieces of machinery. Very interesting I think and not contentious. Well done James.

Watched the one on the phone last night - thoroughly enjoyable. What a nice bloke James May comes across as! I love his enthusiasm for small components made well, and his little monologues about springing springs and kids with mumps.

I like bits of it... Not really the engineering, but his joy in the build, the pretty way the lawn mower was laid out in its component parts, and how he handles the stuff, that he has a feel for it all!

And it's a program I can watch with my youngest who loves taking things apart (mainly computers), and putting them back together again.

We've enjoyed it. We think the parts were laid out by the author of this book, which I was given for Christmas:

One of the pictures from the book:

As my son said, he's going for the full hobo look isn't he.

The photography on the lawnmower one was rather poor I thought. The gimmick of including the other cameras in the shot was annoying and there were parts where focus was off.

It would have been better if he explained a bit more.. "Well that's the magneto reassembled". So James, what is a magneto and how does it work?

Using the the torch on his mobile phone so he could reassemble the phone on last night's episode made me smile.

I enjoyed the first two programmes. The guitar one will be interesting, but I hope it doesn't set me thinking about swapping out the standard pickups in my copy telecaster for more expensive ones. ........
