car, tractor, what's the difference...

Tractors are very much bigger and don't move as fast...

Also have to ever seen a car used to muck out a cattle byre??

Hobo, as well as looking at the way you're riding as suggested above, if you're concerned about a lack of space and want give yourself an extra "cushion" of air around you, try wearing a flappy jacket. I've noticed drivers tend to give cyclists more overtaking room if they're wearing something waving in the wind.

I don't really have a lot of problems out on the road. People who don't like to cycle or think it is to dangerous should quit and stop spreading their fear among other cyclists.

We all know the risks involved-if you don't like it then don't do it.

I have to agree with User3143 on this...

Yes but using that logic, nothing would get done. Surely it's better to get someone used to the way traffic is on the roads, rather than telling them to stay off the roads?

Due to the responsive positive answers and questions to the post i will be strapping a 6 foot plank to my rack and cycling over to ctc forum to see if there is a more positive productive response.

Hobo, forgive me but I've only just noticed your thread. I would say the CTC are the people to see - they're now running a campaign against bad driving.

With regards to what you can personally do I would say strap a camera to your bike/helmet. If anything really bad happens atleast you have a chance of having captured some evidence. You can also take that evidence to the local police, your MP or send it to no.10 in your own personal campaign.

Also I think more of us need to lodge our concerns with government, not just in road safety but on all aspects of road use (such as the pothole situation for one)

Edit: I'll just add that I dont think the road is as dangerous as many think, mostly drivers I'll add. It depends on your locality too

If I hear someone approaching fast I ride one handed, take handkerchief out and start blowing nose (with slight wobble to boot). Also move slightly to right and then drift back into to left as they get within 5 yards.

Seems to completely phaze most drivers. Guess they think you are going to wobble underneath them and can't be bothered having to clear up the mess.

I have no qualms whatsoever about weaving a bit, usually have to to avoid potholes and general crap, and some loose hands wobble the rest of the time

it works

Ah yes, the professional wobble, always useful for persuading driver to give you more road room...
