I finished the new cover for the sunlounger today. ^_^

The cover it was bought with, had suffered in the sunshine of the past six years. It now has a nice soft cotton cover.

I'll admit it's a skill I've never mastered, but my girlfriend will happily buy clothes that she likes, but that aren't quite right, in the knowledge that she can modify them to suit. She's been known to make clothes from scratch and even has a dressmaker's dummy and an overlocker:eek:

A useful skill to have I reckon.

Basic sewing is so easy to pick up, I am surprised it isn't taught as a basic life skill.

When I was a kid we had needle work classes for both repair and decorative work. It ran alongside cooking classes.
Maybe, given cooking is being taught again due to all the cookery programmes, sewing will eventually be on the curriculum again.

My daughter has taken up sewing and embroidery. I have to admit being impressed with her sewing skills - her needlework is uniform and rivals/matches that of a sewing machine. She makes a modest profit from craft fairs but would do well to remember that getting a decent degree ought to be her priority not that I ever participated in displacement activities while at university

I used yo use silk a lot as a covering material for model aircraft. It's a strange material and takes some getting used to. Once that the handling of silk is mastered then doing useful things with it is a cinch. I don't think that I'd like to take up the challenge of making garments with it though.

I can sew  though the hand stuff, not with a machine. Last thing I repaired was the bottom of my neoprene overboot, where the edging of the cleat-hole (oo'er) had come away. Mind you, I have to get someone to thread the needle for me...can't see the hole any more (missus)

I caught this programme by chance and love it. My grandmother was a seamstress so I was taught when young and still do my own alterations.

I am enjoying seeing the imagination the sewers put into their work. The programme also brings back good memories and reminds me what a good craft sewing is to have.

my dear ol' ma (god rest her soul), made her wedding dress. she was amazing with a sewing machine and i still remember being a bit freaked out by the dressmakers dummy in her bedroom. i can sew a bit. enough to sort busted seams and put buttons back on and to make something good for a little while longer...she was also pretty awesome at knitting. not as awesome as my dog was at undoing it if she left it unattended on the sofa for 5 minutes, but still, pretty awesome
