My problem keeping things from the allotment is garlic, I can grow a year's supply but they are already starting to sprout at the moment.... I just pick those ones first when I go to the box. By May/June the ones left will be a little woody.

I preserve garlic in oil with herbs and keep the sealed jars in the fridge. Keeps a treat that way. Plus you've got all that lovely garlic-infused oil to use in cooking as well. It's really easy to do.

I don't go through that much oil:laugh:. This is how much we have left at this point in the season.... I use garlic most nights in cooking!

Oooooooooooooooooh! What a box of pure garlic-y magnificence! :hungry:

I use a lot of garlic too. One of my faves is a crusty white french-style bread with an insane amount of garlic in it. I recently took a loaf on the train and nigh on cleared the carriage out. :laugh:

Whenever you roast anything, stick a whole unpeeled head of garlic per person in the roasting pan. Delicious, and a good way to use the stuff up quickly.
That sounds nice.... :thumbsup:

I've been sticking the smaller ones in my stock I make after a roast dinner!

Just wondering if the box is the best way of storing them? I used to knot them on to long strings, and leave them to hang in a cool place. [Oh dear - the only space available was in the front hall of the flat! Hey - it was a talking point :tongue:!]

Thinking about it, I didn't even try to keep them in the dark/out of the light; maybe the good drying before hanging them up sufficiently "put them to sleep".

Aye - and pickled garlic is just sublime! Kids used to devour the stuff like sweets - a jar would empty faster than a pack of biccies.

The stuff I make is given a quick pickle first and then packed in jars with oil and herbs once cool. :smile:

I don't know why we didn't knot them this time and we didn't even seem to clean the mud off very thoroughly!
This year we are storing them in the light, (and cool) of a leanto conservatory.

What do you have to do to pickle them? I must admit I like them when they are inside olives but I buy them like that.

Same as pickled onions ^_^.

[edited to add] Since it was a jar of Iranian Pickled Garlic that set me off all those years ago, I did a wee Google ...................... and these have me swooning with anticipation {insert appropriate smiley for garlic-induced ecstasy}

Err... would it help if I said I hate that veg.... normally none crosses the threshold of our house except today they mucked up our veg delivery and gave us onions and leeks...:cry: I was looking forward to beetroot and dates- not a good exchange and now I need to find someone to give it to. They have refunded half of this week's delivery price but I'd still rather have what I ordered!
