I've seen that clip before but it still gets me every time. It's an amazing performance of an amazing song, which is even more amazing when you consider what a bitter old cynic he was. (Someone mentioned Terry Jacks' Seasons In The Sun upthread, which is a truly abominable saccharine-infused bowdlerisation of one of Brel's most cynical and bitter songs.)

The other thing about that Brel clip that never occurred to me until now is that surely it must be where Sinead O'Connor got the idea for the Nothing Compares 2 U video from?

Further wikinfo about the song, just in case anyone doesn't find it heart-rending enough already:

Ne me quitte pas was written after Brel's mistress "Zizou" (Suzanne Gabriello) threw him out of her life. Zizou was pregnant with Brel's child, but Brel refused to acknowledge he fathered the child. Zizou later had an abortion as a result of Brel's actions.
It is considered by some as "Brel's ultimate classic".He would later say in an interview that the song is not a love song, but rather a song about the cowardice of men.
