Christmas television tends to bring out both the best and the worst in production standards, does it not?

Sorry, it's taken me nearly a week to mull this one over, but the weirdest thing I have seen on TV this past week was on TOTP on Christmas Day itself.
It was the sight of Muse performing 'Uprising' (live?) while a troupe of mini-skirted female santas danced around them. It was just like something out of the TOTPs I used to watch in the 1970s when, stuck for a production idea, they'd stick some totally misplaced dance routine into the most unlikely songs.
For me at any rate, the dancers did not at all tally with Muse's image of (if you believe the popular music press) professional eccentricity.

How much does it cost to Oldham?
I remember thinking that myself- quite at odds with the usual topics of Muses' rantings.

I accidentally tuned into some Sky channel where a guy dressed as Father Christmas was sat reading out a never ending stream of messages that people had texted in to the number at the bottom of the screen while names scrolled down the side. Can't remember how much each message cost. Some people seemed to have listed their entire families on it. Most of the time, the guy was just rambling on about naughty and nice lists, etc.

I could not believe my eyes or ears. I was mesmerized by the awfulness of it. Possibly the strangest thing I've seen on tv this year, let alone this Christmas.

I thought that as well as i watched. All a bit bizarre seeing as Muse seem to be up their own arses a bit as a band.

Also that song they sang is utter drivel. It's like they've taken 10 songs they like and tried to mix them all together and call it their own.

In the same programme though I was highly amused at my male relatives all sitting kidding on they weren't watching and caring when The Saturdays were on. My poor dad didn't know what to do with himself. It was like when a sex scene came on the tele when we were kids always seemed to coincide with him developing a cough, wanting to stretch and change the channel to see if the weather was on.

For those who didn't see it. Get on the i player and you'll see what I mean. bum cheeks, cleavage and suspenders galore xx(

Mind you, it got worse in the early hours of New Year's Day…

It was the sight and sound of Dizzee Rascal murdering 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' on Jools Holland's Hootenanny.

There are just some songs that are imho too classic and sacrosanct to be covered…
