The wife and I got up to view. Stood outside in the garden and saw the blood red top and tiny white bottom much like in PeteXXX 's photo.
Almost to totality, and then in came the cloud. Shame.

I almost always wake up in the midle of the night... except last night... I slept straight through ... doh! By the time I got up at 6am, it just looked like the moon.

Cycled home late last night from Northampton to my country retreat and it did look crisp and clear.

Yes, but it appears red due to refraction of sunlight by the Earth's atmosphere.

You wouldn't think that much would be refracted in the thin atmosphere layer:

The story goes....

A wealthy gentleman was badly bitten by bugs while riding on a certain railway line. Arriving at his destination, he wrote the company an indignant letter and received a prompt reply. It was, said the letter, the first complaint the company had ever had of this nature. Inquiry had failed to reveal any explanation for this unprecedented occurrence. Nevertheless, a number of new precautions were being taken to make absolutely certain such an unfortunate incident never happened again. The letter was signed by a high official of the railway.

The gentleman was well satisfied with this reply and was returning it to the envelope when a slip of paper fell out onto the floor. The hastily scribbled note on it read: "Send this guy the bug letter."

I set the alarm for 3.30, and went out in the garden to watch it, with the binoculars. Well worth it.

I was watching it from 1:10 AM onwards as it developed but only going out every 20-25 minutes or so. the rest of the time I was either watching TV or on here hence my dismay at seeing 'photographs' of the event on MSN before it actually occurred.
Really eerie though and even Maz was glad she saw it.
