If you live in South London, and especially in the Croydon area, the Surrey Hills are not far away.
The Anerley Bicycle Club has been cycling the Surrey Hills for over a century. That is years not miles!
Whilst the Anerley Bicycle Club started life at Anerley (in 1881) it has long been based in the London Borough of Croydon. So if you want to explore the Surrey Hills, perhaps experience Box Hill of Olympic fame, or just enjoy a sociable club ride, have a look at what we offer, at http://anerleybc.org/

There's a thread going on Singletrack right now about how overcrowded it has become in the Surrey Hills, off road admittedly:

It is not only single trackers who are creating traffic jams on the Surrey Hills. Box Hill, since becoming famous as the Olympic Road Race hill now has a constant pelaton of lycra clad wannabes. The Anerley Bicycle Club have been riding these hills for well over 100 years, but of late we are being forced off the roads! Not a month (often a week) goes by without there being a sportif or some other mass event over Box Hill, Ranmore Common and other lumps of the North Downs. Here we are on a quiet Tuesday club ride, before the big day.

The Surrey Hills have lots to offer as can be seen during the rest of that summer bike ride at http://anerleybc.org/tuesday-ride-26-june-2012/

does the 100-year thing give you some kind of inherent divine right of access..?? Or are you bound by the same laws and TROs as everyone else...??

I assume that you are inferring that we were law breakers, ignoring traffic signs. But of course not. The ride date as shown on the Anerley B.C web site, was Tuesday 26th June. The road closures were in July, so no need to invoke our divine rights on this occasion!

It just sounded as though you were unhappy about the Olympic TROs being in place. The Olympic RR was probably an exception, but there's nothing to stop you riding the same roads that sportives are being run on...
