The Televisions with Built-in Freeview/Satellite Receivers...

... has anyone got one of these?

Since I seem to be suffering from some sort of non-specific muscle injury [the doctor thought I'd broken a rib], I won't be doing any riding for a while and will be plonked down in front of the telly.

To this end, I've just bought one [a Samsung 37"] and I can't for the life of me figure out how I am supposed to record a program from the built-in satellite receiver to the DVD recorder without the television screen actually being on. I thought there would have been some way to turn the screen off independently of the receiver, but I'm damned if I can find it.

Does anyone have a similar setup? Doesn't have to be a Samsung, it just seems to me that --- whatever the make --- there should be some way of turning off the screen independently of the satellite receiver... if you could tell me how your telly does it, maybe I'll be able to figure out how I can do it on mine.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

TIA,

You can't!

As soon as the screen goes off, the signal to the recorder is cut!

We ended up buying a second (cheap) Freeview box for the video.

Cheers, Cuno... (damn, I'm not getting notifications for replies...)

Did the same as you with second box, but cannot see it (routed SAT-External Sat receiver- SCART-SCART through DVD rec into TV)... turn the sat box on, get the splashscreen for it, then... nothing. Seriously, not being able to record with the screen off sucks cocks in hell...

You've touched on a point that the manufacturers have overlooked. The irony of having a freesat/freeview/TV...and you have to buy a seperate freeview box if you want to record summat while the tvs off. I hadnt thought about it.
Going to look at my Panasonic setup onight...you've got me thinking now !!!

It's not really an oversight, it doesn't particularly make much that much sense having receivers built in to the tvs, it's mostly to appease the whingers, the digital refuseniks and a small inducement to get change.

Maybe marin, but there's still a clear advantage.
Prior to inbuilt freeview (let alone freesat) i had to have yet another piece of equipment beside the TV. The whole setup is tidier now and god knows its still untidy. TV, DVD recorder, Surround Sound and speakers, Cable box...its like spaghetti junction behind the TV.

That said, the freesat on my TV was easily connected to my old unused dish and i nw have access to a few more channels...channels i wouldnt have missed ironically. It does give me the option of dumping my cable channels, but freesat is still limited compared with even a basic cable package, so the only time i'd likely use the freesat exclusively is if i needed to save money and dump cable.

Its ok i suppose IF you dont have Sky or cable...but otherwise its just duplication for most of us.

I got my Panasonic with all mod cons because it was a really good deal. Did i want freesat...no. But since its there, it gives me a little extra.
