By the way LED, if you sit on the toilet, are you a 'flash in the pan?'

Always thought of it as "light at the end of the tunnel "

I have only just made the Allez Comp winter ready, lights and mudguards etc. but after seeing it get hammered by the weather lately the carbon is going away early and tbh the carbon is my bit of bling and what's bling if it's not pristine

Dave has a point about jumping the gun but i did say it's my first carbon and as such i guess i'm being over protective.

I ride my Carbon bling all year round. And I defy you to find a cleaner machine. As Del rightly said above, the drivechain will wear but the frame will stay pristine if you clean it after every ride. Mr Sheen is a great dirt protector. No need to feel so precious about it.

The Bianchi (alloy frame) gets less use right now but only because i havn't got lights back on it yet.
Personally i don't use it once the gritters are out....my previous Bianchi was used through the winter and toward the end of that particular one, i was giving it a fairly deep clean. I found salt had collected in the front brake nut recess and got between the carbon and the alloy steerer and bubbled and lifted it  . It was only cosmetic, but even so.....

Commuting in winter, my bike gets absolutely filthy. I prefer to use the winter bike, 8 speed, stronger components, easier to clean and for peace of mind i clean it almost every day. I couldn't use the good bike and feel happy about it.

Just the excuse you need for N+1

I have never understood the idea of riding an inferior bike for months just 'cos it's cold & wet. It's a bike. It's built to be ridden, in more or less any conditions. So ride it. The only time I switch is when there's snow on the ground - narrow slicks aren't great with snow. But apart from that, ride, enjoy! Life is too short (and winter too long) to ride a second-rate bike.

I think Monty Winterhack would be rather offended to be described as a second-rate bike. He may be heavier, but he rides perfectly well, and he's better suited to winter conditions due to his componentry. Second-rate indeed. It's a good thing he's over the other side of the room and can't see the screen.

Just because two bikes are different, doesn't necessarily make one 'better' than the other.

Why don't you hang it on the wall and just stare at it, or did you get it to ride?
wacko.gif

I can understand the ice thing, but a bit of water wont hurt it if you rinse it off after a ride.

its already hanging on the wall, but the wife wouldn't let me do it in the hall way...

although i do have a framed photo on the bedroom wall :becool:

yes i got it to ride, but when you have 3 other bikes why muck up the nice one ???

i've lusted after this bike for long enough and for a guy with 3 kids and bills to pay its quite a lot of money to spend on a "non essential item" why shouldnt i look after it ???

there is something very pleasurable about a "truly clean, fresh from the box" bike. im much the same about CD's and DVD's.

i still have the very first CD i bought over 20 years ago and its still like new, but the CD's i bought for the kids at Xmas are a mess already.

whats wrong with looking after your stuff ????

Tried that one but but wife said no, but she did allow me to put a picture of me riding it on the living room wall !

I think she was worried i would be thinking of someone else whilst in bed

It's only a bike!
[/quote]

The purchase of the bike was a huge outlay for myself and family, and at this present moment in my life i have no intentions of ever spending that kind of money solely on myself again. With that weighing heavily in my thoughts i promised myself to respect the sacrifices they made by doing all i could to look after it.

If that means not riding it for a few months then that's the way it's going to be
smile.gif

Kind of screwed up logic i know, but the bike will still be ready to ride after the muck fest of winter is over.
