because it's a tv license... the clue is in the name... are ITV and C4 on the TV or not?

A bit like a road fund license is for a road??

no such tax and it's not for the road.
Altered to 'road fund license'

However the point I was trying to make is it is not a TV license for a tv either,is it?

Oh and BTW HMRC beg to differ with you on wether there is such a thing as road tax, maybe like criminalising the TV license dodger its another piece of legislation change?

I really am missing your point...

if you buy a car then you need Vehicle Excise Duty, Road Tax or whatever they decide to call it.

if you buy a TV then you need a TV licence.

I have neither.

The TV license is also required for a phone, computer, video, DVD player, Surround sound system, in fact anything that is deemed capable of conducting a tv signal through it in real time.

The TV License was and afaik still is used to soley fund the BBC (unlike 'road tax'), the fact that they have now criminalised it and altered the wording to stop people from evading payment through disabling their equipment from receiving BBC proves the tactics of your careing sharing gov't

it's not required for a dvd player, and i'm fairly sure it's not required for my PC, or my phone, and if i had surround sound I'd be surprised if it was required for that.

I like telly.
If I didn't have a tv I wouldn't have seen Sherlock and that woman in the nuddy last week.

Yes it is http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/topics/understanding-your-tv-licence-top3/

If you use them to watch/process live tv broadcasts, however do they have to prove that you are watching them, or do you have to prove you aren't as you have equipment capable of doing so?

srw

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Let's try another comparison. The four-fifths of people investigated *who have done nothing wrong* is a far smaller proportion than the proportion who come through airports and *have done nothing wrong*, but we let them treat everyone as a terrorist.

(For what it's worth, Adrian is spot-on, I think. I suspect criminalisation is no longer appropriate, and the licence fee probably won't last much longer. Which will cost us all money and cultural capital.)

Sorry, but you do.

Not according to their wording

TV Licensing - understanding your tv license said:
You need a valid TV Licence if you use TV receiving equipment to watch or record television programmes as they’re being shown on TV. ‘TV receiving equipment’ means any equipment which is used to watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV. This includes a TV, computer, mobile phone, games console, digital box, DVD/VHS recorder or any other device.

a dvd recorder, not player, same difference between a video player and recorder... one cannot receive tv because it does not have a tuner.

There is no TV tuner in my PC, so if they consider having a mere internet connection as grounds for having to buy a tv licence, then they can kiss my ar$e

you haven't seen my phone, but if you did and once you'd stopped laughing, you'd agree i don't need a tv licence for it.

I doubt my PS1 or PS2 counts.

...and Davidc... they do frequently repeat 'as it is broadcast' in their blurb.

I doubt my PS1 or PS2 counts. PS2 afaik will connect to the web, Plus by having them you have a tv by assoociation.

So yes you are prime meat for the bully boys if you have no license
