I think there are a few remakes worth the candle. Wicker Man I agree is an insult. A remake I think up to the original is Cape Fear, and Scarface (Pacino) isn't really a remake as much as a reused title, but it's a great film.

It is CRINGE-makingly embarrassing. The only thing I remember about it is Cage (who is contractually obligated only to appear in drivel nowadays) pulling a gun on a female cyclist and telling her to 'step away from the bike' so he could nick it and ride off!

Remakes that work... rare imo.

I like the new Crazies film, but thats a re-imagining rather than a remake. Perhaps thats how a film should work. Invasion (mid 2000s) and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1974 I think?) were good remakes as they updated and improved in parts.

Scarface wasnt a remake. It was just a gangster flick that used the same name. Both films are worth watching imo.

3:10 to Yuma is another remake that makes a real effort. Does star Crow, though, and for some thats let down enough.

Why don't they film re-makes of bad films that could have better.

Well, never seen the re-make. And I know what's going to happen in the original, doesn't stop me playing it through again! Edward Woodward is just so 'right' in the film, he simply cannot be replaced. End of story - should be.

I know of practically no cases where the re-make was as good as or better than the original. Perhaps War of the Worlds was a very rare example - but that's maybe simply because the 1950s original was so bl**dy awful! Maybe the Tom Cruise one is not really a 're-make' at all, I have a job remembering the plot - but the SFX certainly have a 'wow' factor, I think it's worth watching just for that...

Perhaps we should have a debate just on dreadful re-makes. I could name a few...

This film has been blighted by the US market since day 1

The original was cut beyond recognition to fit the US market and never really recovered.

The original was superb, I simply hope thatthey can get "Cowboys for Christ" made and released before it is taken over as well.
