I havent told many here but my missus was a very keen cyclist, riding more miles a week than myself and just over a year ago developed a pain in her right knee, after a visit to her GP and subsequently a hospital visit she was told it was a full knee replacement that was needed, no alternative treatments were offered so after a couple of weeks (very short period of time) she was in for the op at Scunthorpe hospital, little did we know that Scunthorpe hospital had an awfull reputation for this operation with a very small % of sucessfull ops that actually worked.
Now its exactly one year to the month she had it done and is now wheelchairbound for anything over a five minute walk, her knee is permanantly bent slightly and thats it, it wont bend or straighten, her surgeon has basically washed his hands of it, he first said she wasnt trying hard enough to get the new joint to work but after her physio team sent him a report of all the work she was doing trying to get back on her bike he then changed his story to, She is trying way to hard:eek: so we decided enough was enough and demanded a second opinion as her GP couldnt understand why only a full replacement was the only option offered, anyway our solicitor has got her into the Claremont private clinic in Sheffield.....yes the same one as all the worlds top cycling teams visit, we were ther a couple of weeks ago when in came the Condor team car with a rider who I didnt see:angry: .......anyway to cut a long story, she is now undergoing the knife again to see if they can get a new knee in and get it working, so hopefully in a few months we may have another new member here if I can find a small enough frame to build up for her, I have been looking but the smaller frames arent exactly cheap.......any suggestions where to get her one as a supprise.

How can something like that be allowed to happen?

As for the bike, Ebay can be a good starting point.

An awful thing to have happen to her.

I wish her a speedy recovery and a proper outcome with the action against the hospital.

Is it worth trying places like Bike Rescue for something to rebuild? Maybe contact Hilldodger as he might still have something left from the big Cycle Magic clear out.

Also, if there are any long term effects (I hope not) there are lots of ways to adapt bikes to accommodate troublesome knees - adapted cranks and so on. Ask on here for advice, but also on the Velo Vision forum, where there are a few people with expertise in that sort of thing.

I am at the moment looking for a small (46-7cm) road frame for her, I have found a few on the bay but the prices are shocking, I am wanting to keep this from her......she doesnt come here..yet so if I can find one I am transferring my 105 group to it and probably give the frame a good flashy respray so it looks as good as new for her, she wont be able to ride "if at all" for a good 6 months from now so I have plenty of time to find a frame.

Terrible story but hopefully a good outcome.

As has been said above eBay would be a good starting point. I've been watching it for a while for a winter bike and I've noticed that Small and X Large frames often go for less than the more average sizes.

Good luck with your search and your wife's rehab  (remember if she starts to look like she's going to be faster than you do the brakes up a bit too tight!)

Best wishes to both of you.

I've got an issue with my elbow (broken as a child, and I have nowhere near full range of motion), and was happy when I spoke to a NHS specialist after much investigation who said "Is there anything you can't do? Do you have much pain? Then I suggest you do nothing until the answer is yes to one of those questions" When a surgeon says "do nothing", you do nothing.

But it was another NHS doctor who said if I ended up choosing surgery: "Even if you go private, choose an NHS doctor, because you they publish their results" - no suggestion NHS was better, just more open.

Too late for Mrs Dangermouse, but a useful lesson to others. Thanks for posting.

(NHS is really a postcode lottery. I spent several months visiting one London hospital - West Middlesex - and they decided that I needed an elbow specialist and sent me to Tooting. And all around, a thorough understanding that joint surgery is risky. Sorry you didn't have that quality of service)

Keep an eye on the Planet-X site.
They just bought a (I think defunct) company in Italy with warehouse full of nice stuff including some very small frames.
