The work week from hell

Well last week is not one I would like to repeat.

I do home deliveries for a very well known diy store, my colleague at work was on holiday, so they send in agency workers to cover,
Its perfect when you get the same person for the week, show them the basics of what to do, and they pick up the rest during the week.

But no not this week, different person every day. some want to work hard, some just want eat, read a paper and txt on the phone and try to do as little as possible.
for the 1st couple of days I has 2 really good people
The last 3 days I would have been better doing the job myself
so early start and late finishes, not impressed

And just to top last week off, go into the locker room to get my bike to find this

Yeah, sometimes it feels like harder work showing someone else the job. We're lucky we just have a couple of casuals who fill in for holidays, so they know the job. We had one who was really really good, she picked the job up superfast, worked really well, anticipated what needed doing next, and I got on really well with her, we chattered away as we worked. Then she went and got a good internship over the summer (she's a student), so we lost her. The girl who covers now (also a student) is fine, but just a bit slower, and less proactive, and less chatty, so it feels like harder work. She's getting better though, maybe she just takes longer to settle into a job.

Work is the curse of the drinking classes. It will never catch on as a popular pass time.

Sometimes it's workers, sometimes it's workplaces. I remember a housemate of mine, who worked in a cooperative/worker-owned wholefood wholesaler telling me how it took a long time to fill orders sometimes if people wanted a few pounds of lots of different things.

Turned out all the mung beans and oats and walnuts and rice and etcs came in identical 56lb hessian sacks, which they simply shelved, at random. When they went to get six different items, they went along opening bags at random till they found the one that contained whatever it was they were after. "Why don't you label the sacks when they come in?" This kind of 'Ooh, that's a good idea' look gradually crept across her face.

I have to say, though, this was the early '80s, and I suspect a *lot* of drugs were being consumed.

I get asked to train newbies on a winding job, last week the young lad was to be polite 'as thick as a brick' he kept repeating, this is really hard,he didn't listen properly and kept making the same mistakes time and again, it is actually 1 of the easiest jobs in the whole place, the boss moved him around and still he didn't get on, then again we have had others who pick it up quickly and work really hard, all folks are different.

Lets just hope your week was a 1 off

Some of these younge lads and lasses wont have worked before and the small amount of time they spend with you are baby steps, stick with them and remember you catch more bees with sugar than vinegar.

I do have the patience of a saint, but last week really did surprise me with the lack of enthusiasm some people do have when its does come down to hard work,

my colleague is back tomorrow so everything back to normal.

A little update, my colleague was back today, all deliveries went like clock work, and even finished work early

I am a postman and in January we started a system where we ditched the cycles and work two to a van. We where just put together with no choice who we work with. I am 45 and I was put with a 27 year old, I am ex army and now a reserve so I expect a lot. Now, he is really good and we have reached a point where we don't really talk about work because we both know what we, and each other, are doing. We also have a good laugh as we work. When he is away it is hard work, I have to talk people through things and some of them don't really care. My mate at work is the other way round. The postman he works with is an a*** and when he is away and he has somebody spare with him the job runs smoother.
