iirc they said something about the 1st Gulf war being wrong, and that U.S Troops shouldn’t be there, the media whipped it up into a frenzy, idiots who thought they were against the military started burning cd’s in the streets, and got them banned by radio stations, when in reality they were against the military getting killed on the whim of politicians, they were eventually proved right, the song was about how it felt to be so badly treated.
In a nutshell, yes!

Plus, stating on stage that they were ashamed of the President (Bush) being from Texas too

Surprisingly, no one appears to have nominated one of the most influential songs of the 20th century.

Southern trees bear a strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swingin' in the Southern breeze
Strange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees
Pastoral scene of the gallant South
The bulgin' eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burnin' flesh
Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather
For the wind to suck
For the sun to rot
For the tree to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop

Ashamedly, I'd forgotten about that!!!:blush::blush::blush:

The castle is lit with candles and torches
The carriages of the nobles arrive in front
The smell of splendour and decadence
And nobody can foresee

The masters and the mistresses are walking through the hall
Smiling and laughing and showing that they are tall
They don't recognise that we're waiting there
And just nobody can foresee
This is the last night of the kings

We are the folk
And we have the right
To stand up and to fight
For an independent life
We are the force
We are the might
And we will stand up
For an independent life

The ball has begun and we're closing our trap
Inwardly we're gathering ourselves
While the dance comes to higher pace
Still nobody can foresee

Joining the circle, in black robes unknown
Unsheathing our swords, get ready to dance
Our hearts are filled with the will to survive
In the last night of their lives
It's a murderous, murderous ball night

Don't know about the best lyrics, but must be up there with most disturbing.

Warren Zevon

"And he dug up her grave and built a cage with her bones
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy"

And lets not forget that the wonderful (ex) President Trump's rhetoric let certain U.S citizens feel they ought to carry on where their ancestors left off, so still as important now, as it was back then.

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I'm still right here
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become?

Which version, though? NiN or Johnny Cash?

I first heard that in the UB40 version, when they were a proper band doing political songs, rather than cheesy cover versions of pop songs. Somehow I only vaguely got the lyrics. Then I heard Billie Holiday's version and I felt sick at the horror of what she was singing about. Grim !

Lyrics were written by a Russian Jew in the years before the Nazi horrors

Oh shoot!
There goes the charabanc*
Looks like we'll be stuck here the whole summer
Well what a bummer
I can think of worse places to be
Like down in the streets or down in the sewer
Or even on the end of a skewer

Whatever happened to - Leon Trotsky?
He got an ice-pick, which made his ears burn
